HC Deb 23 June 1936 vol 313 cc1573-4
19. Mr. SEXTON

asked the Secretary of State for War what percentage of the total value of Army contracts placed during the years 1934 and 1935, respectively, went to the Special Areas of Wales, Special Areas of North-West England, and Special Areas of Scotland?

The SECRETARY of STATE for WAR (Mr. Duff Cooper)

The records of contracts and sub-contracts are not kept in such a form as to enable the desired information to be readily available, and I regret that it would not be possible to obtain it without a disproportionate expenditure of time and of labour.

Mr. SEXTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the unemployed in the Special Areas are gravely dissatisfied with the gross neglect of their plight by the National Government, and is it not possible to get these figures?

Mr. COOPER

I do not think it is possible to get them for the past, but I am quite prepared to consider the possibility and practicability of having them for the future.
