HC Deb 23 June 1936 vol 313 cc1586-7
40. Mr. LESLIE

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the action of the Unemployment Assistance Board in Durham in reducing the allowance of Mr. J. Wilson, of 15, High Dyke Street, Trimdon Colliery, by 2s. per week, on the ground that his son, aged 16½ years, is now in receipt of an increase of 3d. per day under the miners recent wage agreement; and whether he will inquire into the method of computing allowances, with a view to removing what is considered to be a grievance?

Mr. E. BROWN

I am informed by the Unemployment Assistance Board that the facts relating to Mr. Wilson's allowance do not correspond with those set out in the hon. Member's question. The allowances in this case have been throughout at the higher rate provided for by the standstill arrangements, and the adjustments made from time to time on change of circumstances have been governed by the transitional payments practice, and not by the board's discretion.

Mr. LESLIE

Am I to understand that the deduction referred to is not being made?

Mr. BROWN

Perhaps the hon. Member will discuss the matter with me. I have a series of determinations here, and they do not correspond with the facts that he quotes.
