HC Deb 11 June 1936 vol 313 c366
4. Mr. GUY

asked the Minister of Labour whether the recently appointed committee of inquiry into working-class budgets will be given power to investigate the item of expenditure incurred by workmen travelling from local authority housing schemes to their place of work?

Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEAD

The object of the inquiry in connection with which this committee has been appointed is to obtain information required for the purpose of a revision of the basis of the cost-of-living index number. For this purpose it will probably be necessary to obtain some information as to the average weekly amount spent by working-class families on travelling, and, in so far as such expenditure appears in the family budgets collected, it will be taken into consideration.
