HC Deb 10 June 1936 vol 313 c204
32. Mr. KEELING

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that many municipalities are substituting stainless steel for brass buttons and badges on the uniforms of their staffs; and whether, to save unnecessary cleaning, he will make a like change in military uniforms?

Sir V. WARRENDER

I can assure my hon. Friend that the possibility of adopting badges and buttons for the Army of a metal less tarnishable than brass has not been overlooked. Such a change, however, is regarded as impracticable, mainly on the grounds of cost and unsuitability for active service.
