HC Deb 30 July 1936 vol 315 cc1697-8
8. Captain PLUGGE

asked the Minister of Labour what arrangements are made to meet the convenience of unemployed persons who wish to participate in Territorial training; and whether he is satisfied that existing practice does not in any way discourage those concerned?

Mr. E. BROWN

If, as I presume, my hon. and gallant Friend is referring to the receipt of unemployment benefit, I would point out that men drawing military pay during the fortnight of Territorial training are not eligible for benefit. In those cases where men are not drawing military pay during other periods of training and are eligible for benefit, arrangements are made, which I believe to be satisfactory, for enabling men to qualify without the usual attendance at the Employment Exchange.

Captain PLUGGE

Does that mean that a man cannot draw unemployment benefit while attending a Territorial training camp?

Mr. BROWN

The question is whether he draws military pay. If he draws military pay he does not draw unemployment benefit.
