HC Deb 29 July 1936 vol 315 c1522
46. Mr. BATEY

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that the continuance of the household means test by the new Regulations is contrary to the promise he gave last year to maintain the unity of family life; and what steps he proposes to take to prevent the breaking up of family life by the means test?

The PRIME MINISTER

The promise to which the hon. Member refers was made with a full sense of responsibility, and, before approving the draft Regulations, the Government satisfied themselves that it had been completely observed.

Mr. BATEY

But has the promise that was made been carried out? Have not the new Regulations proved that the Prime Minister is not a man of his word? What is the Prime Minister going to do now to carry out his promise?

Mr. ELLIS SMITH

Will the right hon. Gentleman take into consideration the definite promise made to the people of this country by the Lord President of the Council that in the event of the principle of the household means test not being removed he would resign?

Mr. BATEY

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member has had an answer.

Mr. BATEY

On a point of Order. I do not think we should be put down because time has been wasted on questions by some of the Ministers.
