HC Deb 28 July 1936 vol 315 c1307
42. Mr. N. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will issue instructions to the public assistance committees in Scotland that, when fixing up a scale for any claimant a member of whose family is in receipt of Unemployment Assistance Board's allowance, they will disregard the amount paid by the Unemployment Assistance Board in the same manner as disability and wound pensions are disregarded.

Sir G. COLLINS

No, Sir. The responsibility for deciding the amount of relief necessary in any individual case rests primarily with the Poor Law authority concerned and I have no power to issue instructions to the authorities on the point raised by the hon. Member.

Mr. MACLEAN

Will the right hon. Gentleman inform his colleague the Minister of Health that his strictures on the Glasgow Public Assistance Committee, in view of the answer that has been given, are entirely unwarranted and unjust?
