HC Deb 20 July 1936 vol 315 c14
23. Mr. JOEL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any correspondence has taken place with the Portuguese Government as to the attitude of Portugal towards the German claims for colony compensation in Africa, or whether any official conversations have taken place with the Portuguese diplomatic representatives in this country?

Mr. EDEN

No correspondence has taken place with the Portuguese Government on this question, but representatives of that Government have on various occasions referred to reports in circulation regarding transfers of colonial territories, and made clear their own attitude towards any suggestion for the surrender of Portuguese colonial territory in Africa.
