HC Deb 20 July 1936 vol 315 cc9-10
14. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, with a view to the world conference suggested in the proposals of 19th March of the Locarno Powers other than Germany, he will propose to the Council of the League of Nations the appointment of an international commission of inquiry on the question of raw materials and international trade, especially in relation to colonies?

Mr. EDEN

His Majesty's Government have under constant consideration the question, which is referred to in the proposals of 19th March, of the extension of economic relations and the organisation of commerce between nations. The hon. Member's suggestion will be borne in mind in this connection.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Does the right hon. Gentleman imply that the Government are favourable to the idea of calling an international commission for this purpose?

Mr. EDEN

We are favourable to what is said about it in the proposals of 19th March. As to the means for implementing it, that is a matter about which I cannot make a statement at present.

Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

Before coming to a decision will my right hon. Friend bear in mind the result of the last world economic conference?

Mr. MORGAN JONES

Did not the Foreign Secretary indicate at Geneva the readiness of the Government to consider this matter, and has he taken steps to bring this proposal to the notice of the authorities?

Mr. EDEN

That is another form of inquiry. This is a larger question.
