§ 59. Mr. GALLACHERasked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will consider recommending the reinstatement of G. Salisbury to the Devonport dockyard in view of the failure of the authorities to give any satisfactory reason for his dismissal without gratuity?
§ The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Sir Samuel Hoare)Salisbury was discharged because the board came to the conclusion that his retention was not in the public interest. In these circumstances I am not prepared to authorise his reinstatement. I have myself read all the papers bearing on Salisbury's dismissal, and see no reason for dissenting from the conclusion reached by the late board.
§ Mr. GALLACHERIs the Minister not prepared to state openly why this man was dismissed, and why his dismissal was of such a character that he was defrauded out of his £34?
§ Sir S. HOAREI repeat that I have been, very carefully into this case, and it is my view that it would not be consistent with the public interest to go further into details.
§ Mr. GALLACHERIs it not the case that the man was dismissed for political activities?
§ Sir S. HOAREI have nothing to add to the answer I have just given.
§ Mr. GEORGE GRIFFITHSWould it not be possible to transfer him to another Government Department?
§ Sir S. HOARENo, Sir; the case has been raised several times in this House, and I have nothing to add to the statements which have been made on the subject.
