HC Deb 15 July 1936 vol 314 cc2047-8
74. Mr. W. ASTOR

asked the Minister of Health whether he can make a state- ment regarding the approaching expiration of the Rent Restrictions Act; and whether he can indicate what the general policy of the Government on this question will be?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of HEALTH (Mr. Shakespeare)

The Rent Restriction Acts continue in operation until 24th June, 1938, and my right hon. Friend does not think that the time has yet come to consider what future action may be required.

Mr. ASTOR

In view of the complication of this subject and the fact that there is much uneasiness among many tenants, will the hon. Gentleman take early steps to announce a policy and to investigate the matter whether by Departmental inquiry or by Royal Commission?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

My hon. Friend can rest assured that we shall do the right thing.
