HC Deb 15 July 1936 vol 314 cc2017-8
4. Sir JOHN WARDLAW- MILNE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the result of his discussions with the United States Government on the subject of smuggling in North China; and whether he expects it to lead to any combined action?

Mr. EDEN

I have nothing at present to add on this point to the answers given to my hon. Friend on 1st July. As stated in the answer given to my hon. Friend the Member for Preston (Mr. Moreing) on 13th July, I do not think there is at the moment any further action which His Majesty's Government could usefully take in the matter.

Sir J. WARDLAW-MILNE

Am I right in saying that it is now a good many weeks since protests were made to Tokyo on this question, and that there has been no result?

Mr. EDEN

I should not like to say that there has been no result. If my hon. Friend will look at the reply to which I have referred he will see the stage we have now reached.

Lieut.-Commander FLETCHER

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that British interests are not seriously affected by this smuggling and, if so, will he consider issuing orders to the Commander-in-Chief of the China squadron?

Mr. EDEN

It is because British interests are affected that we have taken these steps.
