HC Deb 14 July 1936 vol 314 cc1864-5
59. Mr. PORRITT

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the steady increase in imports into this country during recent years of cotton yarns and manufactures from Japan; and whether he proposes to take any special action in the matter?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I am aware that imports of cotton. yarns and manufactures from Japan have increased during recent years, but I would point out that they amount to only a fraction of 1 per cent. of United Kingdom production. If the trade interests affected consider that they need further protection, it is open to them to apply to the Import Duties Advisory Committee.
