HC Deb 14 July 1936 vol 314 cc1853-4
24. Mr. JENKINS

asked the Secretary for Mines whether the hydrogenation plant which has been in operation for some time at Billingham-on-Tees is a commercial success; and, if so, will he take steps to arrange for the construction of similar works in the Special Area of South Wales and Monmouthshire?

Captain CROOKSHANK

It is not yet possible to say definitely whether the results which were anticipated when the plant was decided upon will be achieved in practice. The second part of the question, therefore, does not arise.

Mr. JENKINS

Can the Minister say when that information will be available?

Captain CROOKSHANK

No, Sir, it is impossible to give a date. This is a full-scale experiment and until those who are working it are satisfied, it is impossible for me to say anything definite about it.

Mr. G. HARDIE

It is not the case that only oil, and not coal, has been hydrogenated?

Captain CROOKSHANK

I would like to see questions of that kind on the Paper, because I am not operating this plant.

Mr. HARDIE

That is a good job.
