HC Deb 09 July 1936 vol 314 c1384
36. Mr. MANDER

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether, in view of the difficulty of unmarried women in finding employment at the age of 55, he will consider the possibility of granting old age pensions to unmarried women at that age?

Mr. W. S. MORRISON

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave on 20th February last to the hon. Member for West Walthamstow (Mr. McEntee).

Mr. MANDER

When will the Government be able to give a definite decision upon this matter?

Mr. MORRISON

The answer to which I have referred the hon. Gentleman says that similar proposals have been made in the past, and it has not been found practicable to adopt them.

Sir FRANK SANDERSON

Can my hon. and learned Friend give the approximate cost?

Mr. MORRISON

I can if a question is put down to that effect. I would not like to give an inaccurate figure.
