HC Deb 08 July 1936 vol 314 cc1211-2
90. Mr. T. JOHNSTON

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has made any arrangements to encourage the operation of the milk-in-schools scheme during the forthcoming summer holidays?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

Yes, Sir. My right hon. Friend has approved for the purpose of Section 11 of the Milk Act, 1934, the arrangements made by the Scottish Milk Marketing Board for the supply of milk at reduced prices for consumption by children at centres in Glasgow. Particulars of the arrangements have been laid before the House.

Mr. JOHNSTON

Is this provision to be made only in Glasgow?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

It is only in Glasgow in the first place.

Mr. JOHNSTON

Is the Under-Secretary aware that the schools in Glasgow are now closed for holidays?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

The scheme to which I have referred is that four centres shall be open in Glasgow for the distribution of milk during the holidays. The right hon. Gentleman is now referring to schools throughout Scotland, which is a wider question.

Mr. JOHNSTON

The question on the Paper is perfectly specific. Arrangements have been made in England. Cannot the Under-Secretary give us an answer with regard to Scotland?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

I have given the answer. Arrangements have been made for opening four centres in Glasgow which will deal with a very large number of children.

Mr. HENDERSON STEWART

How will the centres work? Will the children have to go to them?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

Yes, the children will go there.
