HC Deb 06 July 1936 vol 314 cc830-1
10. Mr. A. HENDERSON

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will inquire of the German Government whether they are constructing fortifications or adopting other measures of defence in the demilitarised zone of the Rhineland; and whether he will convey to the House any information in his possession relating thereto?

15. Mr. VYVYAN ADAMS

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is now in a position to state what progress the Germans are making in fortifying the zone which their forces lately entered in breach of the Treaty of Locarno?

Mr. EDEN

I would refer the hon. Members to the reply given to a similar question on Wednesday last. I do not think that it would be appropriate to raise this individual question separately with the German Government at this moment, when it is still the earnest hope of His Majesty's Government that it may be possible with the other Powers concerned to enter into general negotiations with Germany.

Mr. HENDERSON

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that the German Government are doing their best gradually to calm the tension in Europe, as indicated in their note to the Locarno Powers received on 31st March?
