HC Deb 06 July 1936 vol 314 cc828-9
37. Mr. REMER

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has considered the resolution of the Silk Association that flags and other decorations used in connection with the Coronation celebrations shall be entirely of British origin and manufacture; and what decision he has come to on the subject?

Captain CROOKSHANK

I can assure my hon. Friend that every possible step will be taken to ensure that any flags or other decorations purchased by Government Departments for use or display in connection with the Coronation celebrations will be of British manufacture. My right hon. Friend has been informed by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health that he will remind local authorities of the desirability of purchasing British goods in any circular which he may issue in connection with the celebrations. I am sure that the motives which prompt the general public to join in the celebrations will also make them wish to ensure that any flags which they purchase are of British manufacture, and I would remind my hon. Friend that imported silk flags are required to bear an indication of their origin on sale in this country.

Mr. LAWSON

Is the Minister aware that this is an example of the flexibility of capitalism, and will he direct the attention of the Minister of Agriculture to this matter?

Mr. DAVID ADAMS

What steps have been taken to suspend our foreign trade meanwhile?
