HC Deb 06 July 1936 vol 314 cc827-8
4. Mr. LIDDALL

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will request His Majesty's Minister in Brazil to ascertain from the Brazilian authorities whether the promised permission has yet been granted to the Cantareira e Viacao Fluminense Company and Leopoldina Terminal Company to adjust their tariffs so as to afford a return on British savings invested in those concerns?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

I understand, from information received from its representatives in London, that the local Brazilian company, which, as my hon. Friend is aware, is controlled by the Leopoldina Terminal Company, expects shortly to receive the permission of the authorities of the State of Rio de Janeiro to raise its tariffs by 50 per cent.
