HC Deb 02 July 1936 vol 314 cc617-8
77. Mr. J. GRIFFITHS

asked the Secretary for Mines what percentage of the total output of coal produced in South Wales in the 12 months ended 31st December, 1935, was sold inland and what percentage was sold export; and the average prices realised by the colliery company for each ton of coal sold inland and export, respectively?

Captain CROOKSHANK

The output of saleable coal in South Wales and Monmouth during 1935 was 35,025,110 tons and the quantity shipped abroad, either as cargo or bunkers, was 18,388,824 tons or 52.5 per cent. of the total output; 2,414,000 tons approximately were used for mine consumption and miners' coal, leaving a balance of 14,222,286 tons, which represents inland sales, except so far as additional coal may have been put into stock. I am unable to supply the information as to prices asked for.

Mr. GRIFFITHS

Do the hon. and gallant Gentleman and the Government propose to make representations to the owners, in respect of selling schemes, that assistance should be given to the export districts to help them to carry this tremendous burden?

Captain CROOKSHANK

That is quite another question. That is not what was on the Paper or what I am answering.
