HC Deb 02 July 1936 vol 314 cc603-4
35. Sir R. YOUNG

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that Mrs. Alice Johnson, of New Farm, Letton Bridge, Cheshire, applied for an old age pension in October, 1934, and that a pension has now been granted from July, 1935; and will he state the reason why the pension was not granted from the date of application or from the date of her 70th birthday?

Sir K. WOOD

I received an appeal against a decision of the Congleton rural district pension sub-committee of 6th January, 1936, disallowing the claim to a pension made by Mrs. Alice Johnson on 8th July, 1935. After careful investigation I reversed the decision of the pension sub-committee and allowed a pension. The date from which a pension commences to accrue is determined by the Statute, and in this case was 12th July, 1935, i.e., the first Friday following the receipt of the claim. I understand that a previous claim by Mrs. Johnson was withdrawn on 27th February, 1935.

Sir R. YOUNG

In view of the fact that she applied for her pension in October, 1934, and that her husband died at Easter, 1935; surely she should be entitled to her pension from the time when her husband died?

Sir K. WOOD

If the hon. Member will send any further particulars, I will certainly examine them.
