§ 38. Mr. RANKINasked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware of the large number of persons in this country who are graduates of the various physical training colleges and who at present are not engaged in any employment connected with physical training; and whether he will arrange to obtain particulars of such persons with a view to devising some scheme for making use of their services?
Mr. STANLEYI have not any precise information, but I am not aware that there is any unemployment among teachers who have completed a course of training at a physical training college. I understand that the Central Council of Recreative Physical Training is already compiling a register of qualified men and women who would be prepared to offer their services, but most of these are already engaged in physical training in the day-time.
Viscountess ASTORDoes the right hon. Gentleman think it is important to get qualified physical training teachers before he begins to have the classes, and is it true that there is really a shortage of proper fully trained teachers?
Mr. STANLEYUndoubtedly if the demand increases very much, as we hope it will, a greater supply will be needed, but I was asked a question as to the present position.
