HC Deb 15 December 1936 vol 318 cc2254-5
32. Mr. CASSELLS

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether in light of the Government's proposed policy relative to the increase of salaries payable to English judges, he is prepared to consult with the Scottish Sheriffs Substitute Association in order to ascertain from that body its view on salaries at present paid to sheriffs' substitutes in Scotland?

Mr. ELLIOT

I have received representations from the Association of Sheriffs Substitute for a revision of salaries, and am in communication with the Treasury on the subject. Before a final decision is reached I propose to communicate with the association.

Mr. MACQUISTEN

Will the Secretary of State for Scotland keep in view the fact that the sheriffs substitute in Scotland have a much wider jurisdiction than county court judges in England, and as they have a far more onerous task are they not entitled to the same pay?

Mr. CASSELLS

May I take it that this vexed question will have favourable consideration by the right hon. Gentleman's Department?

Mr. ELLIOT

It will have every consideration by my Department, and I have been in communication with the Treasury on the subject.
