HC Deb 15 December 1936 vol 318 cc2275-6
Earl WINTERTON (by Private Notice)

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any information to give concerning the grave events in Shensi, including the reported capture of General Chiang Kai-Shek?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

Yes, Sir. I am informed by His Majesty's Ambassador that the Chinese Government confirm the report that on 12th December, General Chiang Kai-Shek was placed under arrest at Sian, the capital of Shensi Province, by troops under the command of Marshal Chang Hsüehliang. The Central Government are despatching troops to Shensi to deal with the situation and pledges of support have been received by them from leaders all over China. I have at present no information regarding subsequent events at Sian.
