HC Deb 08 December 1936 vol 318 c1838
69. Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the British guarantee to support France in the event of an act of unprovoked aggression extended to the French Colonies?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Viscount Cranborne)

As my right hon. Friend stated in reply to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for South-West Norfolk (Mr. De Chair) on 2nd December, the guarantees given under the Treaty of Locarno are clearly limited to Europe by the wording of the Treaty.

Mr. MANDER

Can the Noble Lord say whether this French undertaking of support to this country applies to the British Colonies as well as to the British Isles?

Viscount CRANBORNE

That is quite a different question and I suggest that the hon. Gentleman should put it down.
