HC Deb 08 December 1936 vol 318 c1831
56. Mr. H. G. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the circular issued on behalf of the Government of the Province of Alberta by Lloyds' Bank, Limited, seeking to induce holders of the 5 per cent. redeemable stock 1962 to 1967 of that province to accept half the stipulated rate in full satisfaction of the interest accruing; and whether he is prepared to make representations to the Dominion Government to bring pressure upon the Government of Alberta to discharge its full obligations?

The SECRETARY of STATE for DOMINION AFFAIRS (Mr. Malcolm MacDonald): I

have seen the circular to which my hon. Friend refers. As regards the second part of the question, I have not received any representations from the bondholders, and therefore the matter has not arisen.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Does the right hon. Gentleman think it desirable for a British bank to induce British stockholders to accept a reduction of the rate of interest?
