HC Deb 02 December 1936 vol 318 c1238
22. Mr. PALING

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken to implement the proposals as to soil conservation in Kenya Colony made by Sir Alan Pim; whether his warning against the treatment of the question as of secondary importance will be taken into account; and what instructions are being given to both administrative and technical officers?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I can assure the hon. Member that the Government of Kenya is now fully alive to the vital importance of soil conservation. The problem affects both the settled areas and the native reserves, and while, within the compass of a Parliamentary reply, I cannot give a detailed account of the various steps that are being taken to deal with it, I may say that the active co-operation of administrative and technical officers is being enlisted. I have also been glad to learn of the valuable assistance which is being rendered by private individuals and associations in the effort to awaken all sections of the community, both European and native, to a realisation of its importance.
