§ 51. Mr. THORNE,asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has received a report from the factory inspector in connection with the fatal accident to William Brooks, of Kingsteignton, who was caught in some machinery at the Newton Abbot brick works; and whether the machinery in question was properly protected?
§ The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE, for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)Yes, Sir. The case is now under consideration, and I am not at present in a position to make any further statement.
§ 52. Mr. THORNEasked the Home Secretary whether he has received a report from the factory inspector in connection with the fatal accident to Robert Corner, who was decapitated when riding in an overhead trolley at the Corby Steel Works, Northants; whether he can state the cause of the accident; and whether the machinery in question' was properly protected?
§ Mr. LLOYDIt appears from the report received on this shocking accident that the unfortunate man's head was caught by a fixed projection above the path of the trolley when it was in 556 motion. He would seem to have climbed up on a rail between one of the driver's cabs, which were roofed, and a hopper in the centre of the trolley. No breach of the Factory Acts appears to have been involved. Steps have been taken to prevent any similar accident by roofing over the spaces between the cabs and the hopper.
§ 55. Mr. THORNEasked the Home Secretary whether he has received a report from the factory inspector in regard to the fatal accident to John Durrant, of Mill Place, Crayford, Kent, who was crushed to death at a local oil works; whether he can state the cause of the accident; and whether the machinery in question was properly protected?
§ Mr. LLOYDAccording to the report of the evidence submitted at the inquest, the accident appears to have been mainly due to a railway wagon having been left in a siding with the brake insufficiently applied. No breach of regulations appears to have been involved.
