HC Deb 27 April 1936 vol 311 cc561-2
44. Mr. HARDIE (for Mr. GALLACHER)

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware of the discontent being created among the market gardeners in Scotland as a result of the operation of the scheme for putting the unemployed on allotments; that the sale of produce from these allotments is seriously undercutting the market gardeners and that, instead of this scheme contributing in any way towards a solution of the problem of the unemployed, it is imposing new problems on a hard-working section of the community; and what steps does he propose to take to control the operation of this scheme?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for SCOTLAND (Lieut.-Colonel Colville)

My right hon. Friend has received no representations on the subject and has no evidence that the sale of produce from the allotments in question is having the effect suggested by the hon. Member. The allotments scheme has proved to be highly beneficial in providing healthy occupation and a supply of fresh food for the holders and their families.
