HC Deb 27 April 1936 vol 311 cc556-7
54. Mr. DAY

asked the Home Secretary whether he has received any reports on the efficiency of the pocket wireless sets used by police officers in the Sussex constabulary; has consideration been given to the use of these sets by police officers on night duty in the Metropolitan district; and will he give particulars?

Mr. LLOYD

My right hon. Friend has received particulars of various instances in which the sets in use by the Brighton police have proved of great service. They have not been taken into use by the East or West Sussex Constabulary. As I stated in reply to the hon. Member's question on 24th February, the Commissioner of Police has given the matter his consideration, but is satisfied that—at any rate at present—the apparatus is not suitable for use under the conditions that have to be met in the Metropolitan Police district.

Mr. DAY

Has the hon. Gentleman had his attention drawn to the tribute paid to these sets by the Recorder of Sussex?

Mr. LLOYD

Yes. A man was found committing a burglary at 12.45; he escaped but was caught in half-an-hour's time, and was committed for trial by the justices, and sentenced to a term of penal servitude by the Recorder on the same day.
