HC Deb 27 April 1936 vol 311 cc543-4
29. Mr. de ROTHSCHILD

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will, without delay, make an announcement of the long-term policy which the Government intend to adopt in respect of livestock in order to end the uncertainty which is now causing so much concern to farmers and traders?

Mr. ELLIOT

I am not in a position at present to add to the replies given to recent questions on this subject, in particular to those by my hon. Friend the Member for South Croydon (Mr. H. G. Williams) and my right hon. Friend the Member for South Molton (Mr. Lambert) on 4th February, and my hon. Friend the Member for Lincoln (Mr. Liddall) on 6th April, copies of which I am sending to the hon. Member.

Mr. de ROTHSCHILD

Is the Minister aware that those replies were not in any way satisfactory to the farmers and will probably make them believe that the promises made by the Government at the General Election were piecrust promises?

Mr. ELLIOT

I do not for a moment suppose that those replies, which were to the effect that we were not yet in a position to make a statement, would satisfy the producers, but I have every reason to hope that the policy eventually announced will be as satisfactory as the beet sugar policy in which I had the support of my hon. Friend.

Mr. de ROTHSCHILD

Is the Minister aware that one right does not make up for a wrong?
