HC Deb 27 April 1936 vol 311 c551
41. Mr. JOHNSTON

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will cause inquiry to be made into the circumstances under which the Unemployment Assistance Board, Springburn Office, intimated by letter, on 6th April, to a man resident in Lennoxtown that, owing to an increase of 9d. per week in the average earnings of his slaughter, he was to suffer a reduction in his rate of assistance by the board from 26s. to 25s. per week; and whether he will say on what grounds the increase in wages of 9d. was made the occasion for a reduction of 1s. in the family income?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead)

I am informed that the actual increase in wages brought into account was one shilling, and that the reduction of the allowance by this amount was in accordance with the practice of the local authority by whom transitional payments were formerly administered.

Mr. JOHNSTON

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that the letter sent out by his Department was to the effect that the increase of wages was only nine-pence; and whether he is considering the amendment of these Regulations, will he take the advice of the most appropriate advisers and, in particular, the Lunacy Commissioners?
