HC Deb 23 April 1936 vol 311 cc289-90
15. Mr. LEACH

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the inadequacy of the reasons given in Cmd. 5159 for increasing the duty on cheap hair-combs, he has, before making the Order, satisfied himself that the increased duty will not result in higher prices and injury to the poorer sections of the community who buy these articles?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The committee's report indicates that attention has been given to the point to which the hon. Member refers, and that in the opinion of the committee the increased duty is not likely to produce the result he appears to apprehend.

Mr. LEACH

Having no personal use for a hair-comb, may I ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who is obviously not in that position, whether he will consent to withdraw this regulation?
