HC Deb 22 April 1936 vol 311 cc139-40
20. Mr. LYONS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air what progress has been made with the ground organisation and equipment necessary to allow night-flying regularly to take place on Imperial Airways routes from Cairo to Johannesburg; and whether it is intended that the whole scheme should operate through Central Africa in addition to any subsequent coastal services?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for AIR (Sir Philip Sassoon)

Negotiations are being actively pursued with the local governments concerned for provision of night-flying facilities on the main flying boat route, which on the southwards run will branch off at Kisumu to Mombasa and then to Durban. In reply to the second part of my hon. and learned Friend's question, the route from Kisumu to Johannesburg will still be operated with landplanes.

Mr. LYONS

Can my right hon. Friend give some approximate date when night-flying over Central Africa will be put into operation?

Sir P. SASSOON

Officials from the Air Ministry are out there settling all the details with the local governments concerned.
