HC Deb 24 October 1935 vol 305 c293
18. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Labour how many persons were employed in the mining industry on 1st October, 1931, and for the latest date for which figures are available?

Mr. E. BROWN

At 1st October, 1931, the number of wage-earners on the colliery books in Great Britain was 823,500. At 12th October, 1935, the corresponding total was 748,100.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

May I ask whether between now and 14th November these figures will be placarded before the country?

Mr. BROWN

If that were done we should also have to placard the figures between May, 1929, and October, 1931, which show a decline in the number of employed of 114,000.
