HC Deb 24 October 1935 vol 305 c302
21. Sir PERCY HARRIS

asked the Home Secretary whether he is now in a position to make a statement about the case of the Bethnal Green man who at Old Street Police Court was sentenced to two months' hard labour for stealing two loaves of bread off a doorstep; and whether he is prepared to revise this sentence, special consideration being given to the fact that he lives with his mother, who is a widow with five children still at school?

Captain WALLACE

The relevant facts to be considered in this case are not limited to those stated in the hon. Baronet's question, and it has not been possible yet to reach a decision, especially as the time within which this man could appeal against his sentence has not expired. My right hon. Friend will communicate the decision to the hon. Baronet as soon as possible.

Sir P. HARRIS

Will the hon. and gallant Gentleman give full consideration to the family conditions of this man's widowed mother?

Captain WALLACE

All these matters will be borne in mind.
