HC Deb 22 May 1935 vol 302 c331
17. Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGE

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what air transport companies are operating in Gambia, Sierra Leone, the Gold Coast and Nigeria; which of them carry passengers; and which of them are British?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The Deutsche Luft Hansa A. G., a German company, operates an air mail service between Europe and South America, via, Bathurst in the Gambia. I understand that no passengers are carried. No other company is at present operating a. regular air service in British West Africa.

Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGE

Is my right hon. Friend satisfied when the only air transport in British West Africa is in the hands of a German company?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

No. Of course, this is a port of call in a through trans-Atlantic service, but I have reason to hope that before very long a British service will be operating to and in West Africa.

Lieut.-Colonel HENEAGE

Can my right hon. Friend say when that is likely to happen?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

No, I would not like to prophesy. The whole matter is under consideration.
