HC Deb 16 May 1935 vol 301 c1876
37. Brigadier-General NATION

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in the interests of British industries, he will take steps to ensure that the Import Duties Advisory Committee shall communicate to applicants their reasons for refusing are commendation for an increased duty?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The Import Duties Act lays no such requirement upon the Advisory Committee, and I should not feel justified in seeking to interfere with the discretion of that body, which within the terms of the Act is responsible for settling its own procedure.

Brigadier-General NATION

Are there no means by which a Member of this House can ascertain the reason why the applications are being refused?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

One might ask the Import Duties Advisory Committee, but I rather doubt whether they would answer the question.
