HC Deb 09 May 1935 vol 301 cc1112-3
4. Mr. HANNON

asked the Minister of Labour the number of public companies, municipal bodies, and large employers of labour in Great Britain and Northern Ireland which have awarded a full day's standard rate of pay to ther work-people on the national holiday on 6th May?

Mr. STANLEY

I have not the information asked for by my hon. Friend.

Mr. HANNON

Could not my right hon. Friend get this information from the various sources which are available to him? It would be interesting to know to what extent, on this historic occasion, employers have co-operated with employés?

Mr. T. SMITH

Can the Minister say how many mine owners have recognised the occasion by making some contribution to the working people?

Mr. STANLEY

I cannot say.

Mr. THORNE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how many members of the federation of the hon. Member for Moseley (Mr. Hannon) have done so?

Mr. STANLEY

That question should be addressed to the hon. Member.

Mr. HANNON

Will the right hon. Gentleman try to get this information so that we may have some basis for the future as to the best way of using this money for some helpful national purpose?

Mr. STANLEY

Reports have appeared in the newspapers of large bodies of employers who are doing this, and I do not think that an inquiry by the Department would be very helpful.
