HC Deb 09 May 1935 vol 301 cc1122-3
25. Mr. CAPORN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that men's half-hose have been imported into this country with invoices declaring the value to be 1½d. per dozen; and whether import duties have in fact been levied on such goods at such values?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am not aware of any importations of the kind mentioned by my hon. Friend, but if he will let me have further particulars I will have inquiries made.

Mr. CAPORN

While thanking my right hon. Friend for his answer, can he say what has been the lowest value, and whether he is satisfied that it is a fact that large quantities of goods have been imported in the past on fictitious invoices; and is he taking steps to prevent it in future?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am speaking from recollection, but I think my information was that no price lower than about 1s. 4d. had been known.
