HC Deb 14 March 1935 vol 299 cc568-9
Mr. GROVES

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware of the possible misunderstanding likely to arise from the application of the 30 miles per hour speed limit in built-up areas so far as police cars are concerned, and whether he will state the definite position upon the matter?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am obliged to the hon. Member for drawing attention to this point. The position is that the speed limit will apply to police cars except in the circumstances set out in Section 3 of the Act of 1934. This section provides that "the provisions of any enactment, or of any statutory rule or order, imposing a speed limit on motor vehicles shall not apply to any vehicle on an occasion when it is being used for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes, if the observance of those provisions would be likely to hinder the use of the vehicle for the purpose for which it is being used on that occasion."

Mr. GROVES

Does it mean that these police cars will not be handicapped by the provisions of the Act when trying to overtake people who are breaking the law?

Sir J. GILMOUR

That is so.

Sir WILLIAM DAVISON

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the officers in these police cars will be in uniform or not?
