HC Deb 07 March 1935 vol 298 c2106
11. Mr. HUTCHISON

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the fact that the new electoral rolls are published at mid-October, only a fortnight before the municipal elections on 1st November, he will consider the possibility of completing these rolls at an earlier date, so as to meet public convenience?

Sir J. GILMOUR

It is the practice of my Department to urge registration officers to make such arrangements that copies of the register shall be available in the case of all municipal boroughs in their respective areas as long before 15th October as possible.

15. Mr. HUTCHISON

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider the possibility of indicating more clearly by some such distinguishing mark as an asterisk or by using heavier type the names of those electors who are entitled to vote in local government elections and those who have the right to vote in Parliamentary elections?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The register of electors is already prepared to indicate by the index letters placed in separate columns the nature of the franchise possessed by the elector opposite whose name they appear. This is the clearest method of indicating the franchises possessed by individual electors and less likely to lead to mistakes in registration than either of the proposals of my hon. Friend. No complaints have been received in my Department that the present system works unsatisfactorily.

Captain STRICKLAND

Will my right hon. Friend take into his consideration the marking of the register to indicate whether a woman is married or single, as it would be a great convenience?
