HC Deb 07 March 1935 vol 298 cc2100-1
3. Mr. BATEY

asked the Minister of Labour the schemes initiated in the county of Durham by the commissioner for the special areas; the number of men found employment on such schemes; and the amount of money sanctioned on each scheme?

Mr. STANLEY

I would refer the hon. Member to the statement which I made in the Debate on 4th March.

Mr. BATEY

Are we to understand that the statement of the Minister gave the schemes and the number of men found employment?

Mr. STANLEY

I gave a long list of the activities which the commission have undertaken, including several proposals made to the Durham County Council, and, in answer to a question on Tuesday, I gave the total figure.

Mr. BATEY

If the Minister said that £600,000 had been sanctioned, surely he can tell us how that £600,000 is made up.

Mr. STANLEY

I think that the hon. Member will realise the difficulty in regard to grants to local authorities for smallholding schemes or poultry schemes, and that it is almost impossible to say the amount of employment which is being given.
