HC Deb 07 March 1935 vol 298 cc2119-20
42. Mr. EVERARD

asked the Post-master-General what flying services are in use, or contemplated, for the postal services within Great Britain, and between which towns these services will operate?

Sir E. BENNETT

Flying services operating every week day in both directions are in regular use for the carriage of all first class mail (letters and postcards) which will thereby be accelerated, on the following routes:

  • London—Liverpool—Belfast—Glasgow.
  • Liverpool—Isle of Man.
  • Inverness—Wick—Kirkwall.
So far as the future is concerned, I am prepared as hitherto to consider, subject to the negotiation of suitable terms, the use of any British inland flying service provided it offers material acceleration to an appreciable amount of first class mail, and provided its operators can show that they are able to maintain a regular and punctual service.

Mr. EVERARD

May I ask whether the Postmaster-General is considering extending the carriage of mails by air to the Channel Islands, a very important service?

Sir E. BENNETT

That is under discussion.
