HC Deb 05 March 1935 vol 298 c1729
4. Major PROCTER

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that British flags and patriotic emblems of foreign make are being imported into this country for sale in connection with the celebration of His Majesty's Silver Jubilee; and whether he will take steps either to prohibit such importation or to ensure that foreign articles of this description are compulsorily marked with the country of origin?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

There is no power to prohibit the import of British flags and emblems. Many classes of imported goods are, however, required to bear an indication of origin by virtue of the provisions of the Merchandise Marks Acts or orders-in-council made thereunder, and one of these 'Orders requires imported flags to bear as from 1st March an indication of origin on sale or exposure for sale within the United Kingdom.

Major PROCTER

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that these imports are conspicuously marked with the name of the country of origin?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

They have to be marked in accordance with the provisions of the Merchandise Marks Act.
