HC Deb 04 March 1935 vol 298 cc1554-5
10. Sir JOHN HASLAM (for Mr. CHORLTON)

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any information as to the intention of the Chinese Government again to raise its tariffs, particularly on woollens and piece goods; and whether he will forthwith represent to the Chinese Government the injurious consequences of any further increase of its tariffs for British trade?

The LORD PRIVY SEAL (Mr. Eden)

I have no definite information. Opportunity has been taken by His Majesty's representatives in China to draw the attention of the Chinese authorities to the prejudicial effect on trade between the two countries if increases of duty on certain goods were actually made. His Majesty's Legation will continue to watch the situation closely with every regard for the interests of British trade in China.
