HC Deb 26 June 1935 vol 303 c1091
33. Mr. PERKINS

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether he is aware that the existing regulations prevent women pilots from flying alone between Wadi Halfa and Kisumu; and whether he will state the reasons for this discrimination against women pilots?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The regulation in question has, I understand, been made by the Sudan Government in the interests of the personal safety of women pilots, in the event of forced landings amongst wild tribes or in unoccupied territory.

Mr. PERKINS

Do I understand from my hon. Friend that women pilots are more likely to get lost when flying over this section of the route; and, if not, does he consider it right to make the discrimination?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The discretion must rest with the Sudanese Government who are the responsible authority in this area. The matter is under consideration.
