HC Deb 25 June 1935 vol 303 c941
44. Mr. SALT

asked the Minister of Health what are the number of single women who are paying National Health Insurance between the ages of 55 and 65, and the number of widows who are receiving a non-contributory pension at 55 under the 1929 Act?

Mr. SHAKESPEARE

As regards the first part of the question, no actual figures are available, but it has been estimated that the number of spinsters between the ages of 55 and 65 who are insured under the National Health Insurance Acts is approximately 175,000. The answer to the second part of the question is that on the 31st March last 245,261 widows were in receipt of non-contributory pensions under the Contributory Pensions Act, 1929.
