HC Deb 07 June 1935 vol 302 cc2184-5
5. Mr. THORNE

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has any information in connection with the German levy that is to be imposed on industry to subsidise exports from that country; and whether he can give the House any details as to what effect this action will have on German imports to this country?

Lieut.-Colonel J. COLVILLE (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

I have seen references in the Press to proposals of this kind, but I am not in a position to estimate their probable effect, if adopted, on imports from Germany into the United Kingdom.

Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

Will my hon. and gallant Friend consider putting countervailing duties on all imports that are subsidised by their Governments?

Lieut.-Colonel COLVILLE

I think that is a general question, not only in relation to this country, but we have no reason to believe that we have not sufficient power adequately to protect the home market.
