HC Deb 05 June 1935 vol 302 c1853
33. Mr. HALES

asked the Minister of Transport whether, having regard to the large influx of visitors to the Isle of Man on the occasion of the motor-car and motor-cycle races, he will take the necessary steps to enable such races to be held in England, in order that the revenue accruing may be utilised for the benefit of the districts in which the races are held?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Parliament decided in Section 13 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, to prohibit motor racing and speed trials on public highways.

Mr. HALES

Is my right hon. Friend aware of the fact that the Isle of Man authority contributes.£5,000 to the organisation of each of those races; and does he think that they spend that money without getting good value for it; and why should the people of this country have to make a sea voyage in order to see a motor race?
